Day 1: Vista House at Crown Point

Our last stop along Waterfall Drive was a beautiful spot I had heard about perched above the Columbia River.  More of a scenic overview than an "activity spot" if you will.  The Vista House was built in 1917 as a stopping point for tourists along the Historic Columbia River Highway and through the gorge. The house is run by a non-profit group in partnership with the state park program.

The elaborate stone building is located at Crown Point, 733 feet above the Columbia River below. While it serves as a stopping point for visitors along the Historic Columbia River Highway, it is also a memorial to Oregon Pioneers.

The Vista House was restored in 2001 and took almost 5 years to complete at the cost of about 4.5 million dollars. Lewis and Clark also passed along this route camping just below Vista Point at Rooster Rock.

This spot provides views up and down the Columbia River from the highest point on this historic highway. On your way to this spot, you will pass the Portland Women's Forum where you can see views of the Columbia River and the Vista House.

Summary: Pet friendly (outside only). No fee. Restrooms located on the first floor. You can reach the Vista House from exit 22 off I-84. On May 2 Vista House will open for our summer hours. They will change the hours from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm to 9:00 am to 6:00 pm seven days a week, weather permitting. You may call the Friends of Vista House at (503) 344-1368.
